Like many areas in life, to be able to appreciate the good news, we must first know the bad news. Here it is summed up: When God created Adam and Eve, He created them perfect (Gen. 1:31). God gave them one commandment: do not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Gen. 2:16-17). We all know what happened. The serpent deceived them, and they ate (Gen. 3:1-6). God’s creation was no longer perfect. It was marred by sin. Since God cannot even look at sin (Isa. 59:2), He had to do something. After one sin, man was separated from God, and he lost his part in the garden (Gen. 3:23-24).
When God created us, He gave us free will. That means we have the ability to choose for ourselves to sin against God or to love God as He has loved us. The truth is we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Rom. 3:23). Because of those sins (even only one sin), we all deserve death (Rom. 6:23)! God cares for us. He loves us! But because of His absolute perfection, and our imperfections, by nature, we are separated from God (Isa. 59:1-2). Basically, if that separation is there, we have absolutely no hope! This is the bad news. Good thing God has told us the good news (the gospel)!
Now, learn about the good news.
